Chairman’s welcome to innoLAE 2016

Dear friends and colleagues,

It is a great pleasure and a true honour for me to welcome you to the 2ndinnoLAE conference and exhibition.

innoLAE is a key event for the Large-Area Electronics community bringing  industry and academia together in Cambridge, UK, to share the latest results of their research, discuss opportunities for new projects and collaborations, and help bring innovation into the market and accelerate take up. 

Large-Area Electronics (including printable, flexible or organic electronics) has progressed rapidly over the last two decades, producing a wealth of innovations in multiple markets, such as high-tech electronics and consumer goods, for example AMOLED displays, interactive surfaces, curved and large-area TVs, smart patches and smart wearables, and much more.

Those innovations have been inspired by the concept that electronics needs to go beyond the assembly of a myriad of rigid silicon-based integrated circuits fabricated in multibillion dollar manufacturing facilities that follow the traditional Moore’s law.

In the last few years we have seen the evolution of electronics enabled by the combination of multi-functional thin film electronic devices manufactured or assembled on flexible, transparent or even stretchable and biocompatible substrates. These systems interact with humans, sense our world, communicate with each other, assist all of us in our everyday life, and are fully integrated in our living and working environment.

This year, following the success of innoLAE 2015, our conference aims to deliver another compelling set of talks that are organized in plenary and thematic sessions, and include IoT and sensors, energy harvesting and storage, emerging materials, organic bioelectronics for smart implantable and wearable medical devices, thin-film electronics, devices and heterogeneous integrated systems. We will have one plenary session on market opportunities and technology trends, two sessions on advanced manufacturing and one workshop on lasers for additive and subtractive large-area electronics.

Top scientists from all over the world are speaking and attending innoLAE 2016 this year, presenting the view from both small and large global companies, leading manufacturers and end-users, research and technology organizations and academia.

I am particularly grateful to our keynote and invited speakers that help make this event unique by sharing their vision and introducing their latest results at our conference.

innoLAE 2016 will also host an exhibition with 16 exhibitors showcasing their capabilities and demonstrators, and a poster session with 35 posters selected to report the latest findings of actual technologies and applications in the field. The best poster prize will be awarded for the most promising, innovative and well-presented work.

I am sure every participant at innoLAE will find their own field of interest covered well in the programme and will take this opportunity to discuss and interact with other colleagues at the coffee breaks, the poster session, the drinks reception and at the gala dinner at the Selwyn College.

I would like to thank the innoLAE Programme Committee for their help in building such an interesting conference programme and our sponsors and exhibitors for their commitment to support the event.
